Valentin Gorunescu Artist Statement

For many years I asked myself if what I am doing is art or if it is anything else. Finally, I decided to take it out from the memory of the computer, to put it before the eyes of the people and let them decide. Since I always was the only digital artist in all the collective exhibitions at which I took part, and since nobody treated my artworks as an “anything else”, the die was cast: It is art! It was, then, the moment to try to understand for myself what it was all about, where from and why it was emerging all this world of shapes and colors that I was producing. Here the answer was easier: All of this was ME, it was the necessary secretion of my soul, its material manifestation, it was my personal declaration “Behold the Man!”.

My paintings are the result of firstly creating and then exploring fractals, which are the graphical expression of many cold, precise and imbricated mathematical functions, real mini-worlds of shapes and colors into which the journey is always more exciting than the destination, meaning the final image. But this is only a detail. The most important is that my eyes, guided by my feelings, convictions and emotions, can discover in their midst those gems which appeal so much to my personal sensibility that I can find a name for them on the spot. This makes me hope that they can appeal to the inner world of other people too, to the onlookers of my artworks, to YOU for example.

The result of all this process is a special kind of digital wall art, the fractal wall art, materialized, in my case, as giclée on canvas original artworks prints. For the time being I am limiting my productions at the canvas wall art because I consider canvas to be the supreme choice for the paintings in general. It may be an outdated idea, today there are many other paintings supports, but I really see any of my artworks as a big and very visible declaration of feelings, fixed on canvas, on an empty wall.
